S4 E3: Jamie/Lee/Curtis

Today we are joined by Reese Givens (she/her), a talented screenwriter whose work includes Red Rectangle, Saints, and IRL which won the Feature Category in the Slamdance Screenwriting Competition. Our conversation focuses on the 2023 Academy Awards. Reese shares her takes on the nominees, inclusion and diversity at the Oscars, and how women have been treated in the film industry. She also gives advice for aspiring screenwriters.

In this episode, Ahsha and Shelby share stories of women who’ve influenced Black History Month. They discuss how comedians such as Moms Mabley paved the way for modern stars like Ziwe. They touch on Black Women who influenced radio, but to close out the episode, the hosts pick apart the 2023 Grammy Awards.

We’re back for Season 4 babyyy! To kick off a brand new season, Ahsha and Shelby share the love discussing Valentine’s Day. We explore the transformation Valentine’s Day has gone through in society. They also learn the wild origins of the day’s traditions, the harmful stereotypes that come with this celebration, and the best songs for cuffing season.

We also share tips for those wanting to start their own podcast journey.

Step onto the stage with us! This week we meet actor and contemporary performance maker Olivia Parker (she/her). We learn the ins and outs of performance art, the difference in the art styles she specializes in, and the importance of participatory art. She also shares how she got her start in performance and the bravery behind putting yourself on the stage.

We’re back for season 3 babyyy! For our first episode, we meet with Music Technology Major Zoe Veasey (she/her). She shares her experience in audio and sound design as well as being the secretary for Columbia’s Women In Audio club. We also discuss how impactful audio is in the media we consume and our memories with certain songs and sounds.

S2 E4: Your/Ad/Here

For our final episode of She/Her/Hers season 2, we’re making a statement with advertising! We welcome Advertising major Kat Thanopoulos (she/her) to the studio. Looking in to the mostly unspoken topic of ads, we discuss the invasive harm of subliminal messaging, how companies create societal sterotypes, and who get’s a say on what goes out to the public eye. We also share some fun personal memories with commercials and how Gen Z is quick to sniff out trickey advertisements.

In this episode, we’re bringing photography into focus. We speak to photographer Gretchen Shull (they/them) about their experience in artistic and corporate photography. We discuss why photography is less mainstream than other art forms, the importance of the story behind the photograph, and how we make our art stand out from others in our fields.

In this episode, we’re putting our best foot forward and looking at dance one step at a time. We meet one of Columbia College’s Dance Captains Caroline Keenan (she/her) to discuss dance’s influence on the female image. She shares her thoughts on how studios should approach body image and the important history behind dance. We also express how dance has enhanced our own and society’s happiness.

S2 E1: Recording/In/Progress

Welcome to season 2 of She/Her/Hers! Our first episode of the season hits record on the radio world. Today, Ahsha Davis (she/her) and Shelby Steele (she/they) share how they got started and their passion for audio arts. They discuss the importance of radio to society as well as the dangers of podcast echo chambers. Lastly, they share advice to those wanting to get on air and some fun facts about their radio experiences.

Episode 6: Make/It/Write

For our season 1 finale of She/Her/Hers, we’re putting pen to paper and talking creative writing! We welcome newly published author Bianca Rodriguez (she/her) and magazine published slam poet Gabi Pelayo (she/her) to the studio. We uncover the problem of writer’s block, the importance of teaching poetry to children, and stereotypes of female authors. We also get to see the inside looks at Rodriguez’s first chapbook The Idea of God and Other Sweet Things and being a queer poet in the creative world.

Episode 5: Lights/Camera/Action

This episode’s a big one! Join Ahsha and Shelby as we dive into the world of film and television. First joined by writer, director, and editor Hannah Ragsdale (she/her), we discuss intense news rooms, deaf accessability, and the importance of women supporting women. For our second half we meet Ada Greene (she/her), a screenwriter and artist also studying film/tv at Columbia College. We share our opinions on mainstream media, the influence of television on children, and the odd formula for rom-coms. With a big volume warning at the topic of Brigerton, this episode is one ready for the screen.

Episode 4: Hear/Our/Stories

Today’s episode covers social media and journalism. We meet Gigi Paduano (she/they), a social media star who’s been on the scene since instagram’s start and Kristen Gesicki (she/her) a reporter for the Columbia Chronicle and social media and digital strategist. We discuss how social media has affected today’s generation both positively and negatively, the importance of today’s journalism and news, and hearing advice on how to stand your ground as a woman in both of these fields.

Episode 3: Sharing/The/Spotlight

In today’s episode we are sharing the spotlight, covering the behind the scenes of acting, theatre, and playwriting. We first talk with Micah Mixon (they/she) about being an actor in a world of ‘no’ and how to not lose yourself in the audition process. Then we meet with playwright Miranda Hunter (she/they) to discuss the serious stigma in the playwrighting community and the silly inspiration behind her comedic plays. Possibly dipping into the fanficition world as well, episode 3 is a showstopper!

Episode 2: Breaking/The/Scales

In this episode, we’re jamming with three talented musicians from Columbia College Chicago. Featuring VVLVX (she/her), Mary Neely (she/her), and Daniella Crim (she/they), we discuss the challenges women face in the male dominated music industry and what it’s like getting into music business. Of course the episode wouldn’t be complete without some wholesome dedications and discovering where these artists get their inspiration.
